On Proverbs 9

No single verse to quote on this chapter. The whole chapter contrasts wisdom and folly. It is remarkable how often people choose folly over wisdom. This chapter clearly frames the choice in spiritual terms with wisdom leading to life and folly leading to death.

  1. Wisdom to the simple: Turn in here...
“Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.” - Proverbs‬ ‭9:5-6‬. The fruit of labor and industry (something you own and have acquired in the open) yields life & insight.

Folly to the simple: Turn in here...
“Stolen water is sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” - Proverbs‬ ‭9:17‬. The fruit of theft (something that is another’s, that cannot be revealed) yields death.

  2. Read this with Eleanor this morning (we're a couple days behind). Love how he tells us how you can determine a wise person from a mocker: how do they "receive" advice. I don't like rebukes or advice. Yikes.
