On Proverbs 18

v6-7 A fool’s lips bring strife,
And his mouth calls for blows.
A fool’s mouth is his ruin,
And his lips are the snare of his soul.
v 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.

These themes of good words and life contrasted with death repeat again and again. Verse 21 is a great connection between these two themes. It is a great reminder of the power of words.

  1. Prov 18:10-11: “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe. A rich man's wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imagination.” - true safety lies only in the Lord (His Name, His Truth, His Power), not in humans’ imaginary refuges (which are not, but are just illusory), such as wealth.

  2. Your comment reminds me that there are lots of imaginary refuges. Education is one of them. There is great value in education, but it is nothing compared to a relationship with God, and the wisdom that He wants to pour into our lives.
