On Proverbs 13

V3 The one who guards his mouth preserves his life;
The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.

There are so many references to guarding our speech in Proverbs, it must be important! I can't be reminded too many times of this truth.

  1. Highly revere the teaching of wisdom from the Word, because it is a “fountain of life,” so that I “may turn away from” (put some distance between myself and) the “snares of death.” - Prov‬ ‭13:14‬

  2. It is interesting how many of the verses in Proverbs characterize choices as life and death. We don't see it that way, but some of the most seemingly innocuous choices have huge consequences.

  3. I like 13:22 "A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous." I'm pretty sure Solomon wasn't just thinking about passing down money. I think he cared far more about the legacy and heritage we give our kids who then give it to our grandkids. I am thankful I had some good grandparents and pray I turn out to be a good one too.

  4. I can relate to praying to be a good grandparent. With my five little ones, I'm hoping to be a good "back-up" to what my kids are doing to model and teach christian values and principles.
